Spinal Stenosis

This condition is the narrowing of one or more areas along your spinal column. It tends to present itself in the cervical spine (neck) or the lumbar spine (lower back).  Pressure may be applied on the spinal cord or the spinal nerves, resulting in pain and discomfort.

What Causes Spinal Stenosis?

The majority of Spinal Stenosis cases affect the lower back. The causes for this condition are degenerative physical changes in the spine. This ailment affects many patients, as it is a hereditary disease, but the development of spinal stenosis may also stem from the following conditions; they include:

  • Spinal tumors pressing on the spinal cord and nerve roots may develop into Spinal Stenosis. These tumors are most commonly found between the spinal cord and vertebrae.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries resulting from an automobile accident or an injury
  • Paget’s Disease (link to definition?) This is an orthopedic condition causing enlarged and deformed bones.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis- This is a chronic form of arthritis inflaming and stiffening the spine and sacroiliac joints.
  • Arthritis- Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis may cause this condition.
